The Nantucket Land Council continues to engage both the year-round and the seasonal residents of Nantucket through a variety of educational events, fundraisers and outreach activities.

Downtown Tree Walks

Back by popular demand! The NLC is delighted to offer two-hour guided tours, every other Tuesday at 1 p.m., beginning on June 21st. Learn about our historic elm trees, identify species by their bark and leaves and take home our free, illustrated guide to the trees of downtown Nantucket published by the NLC and the Nantucket Garden Club. There is no fee to join a tour, however pre-registration is required due to a size limit on each group tour. Mark your calendars for June 21, July 5 and 19 and August 2, 16 and 30. FREE!
Vernal Pools
Join NLC staff in exploring a sure sign of spring. As soon as the ice melts, these temporary pools begin to fill with life. Learn what makes this habitat so unique and discover the fairy shrimp, frogs and dozens of other creatures that make vernal pools their home. Please call 508-228-2818 to register. FREE!
Annual Dinner

Every September as the crowds begin to disperse, yet with weather remaining quite pleasant, supporters of the Nantucket Land Council come together for a delightful evening. A simple event, with dinner and cocktails, this fundraiser is renowned as one of the most enjoyable on Nantucket.
Featuring live jazz, (past performers include Peter Watrous, Andy Bullington, Eric Wendelken and Tom Stoddard) guests will be well-entertained at the 2011 Annual Dinner, which will be held at the Straight Wharf Restaurant. Straight Wharf has long been known for its creative cuisine, thanks to chef/owners Amanda Lydon and Gabrield Frasca and general manager Scott Fraley. In addition to its stunning harbor sunset views and offering an outstanding dining experience, Straight Wharf is the first and only Certified Green Restaurant on the island of Nantucket. Tickets are $1,000 per person, and $850 is tax-deductible. The 2011 Annual Dinner is scheduled for Labor Day Monday, September 5th.
Annual Meeting

The 2011 Annual meeting will take place on Wednesday, August 10th at 5 pm at the Coffin School, 4 Winter Street. Every August the NLC hosts its annual meeting to review our work over the past year. Each meeting also features a keynote speaker, usually one we bring to Nantucket. Last year the guest speaker was Dr. Jim Sutherland, discussing his recent study and reports on Miacomet and Hummock Ponds.
Other past speakers include Dr. Steve Trombulak, Director of Conservation Biology Laboratory at Middlebury College and James Levitt, Director of Conservation Innovation at the Harvard Forest and Editor of “From Walden to Wall Street, Frontiers of Conservation Finance.” A garden reception, hosted by our generous long-time supporters John and Marie Sussek, follows the meeting. Both the meeting and reception are open to the public free of charge.

The fifth of its kind, NBI week in September brings together scientists and naturalists from on and off-island to spend time investigating specific Nantucket plants and animals, then present their reports. Open to the public
