Educating the Public

One of the NLC's roles is to educate Nantucket's residents and visitors about environmental issues that affect us all. Community decisions about protecting the environment should be based on knowledge, and the Land Council undertakes scientific investigations and hires professional experts to provide relevant environmental data to the public. The communication of this relevant information is accomplished through our semi-annual newsletters (current and archived issues are available online), advertisements with local media, participation and commenting at local reviews, public hearings and Town Meetings, and by establishing connections with other conservation and educational organizations, governmental offices and representatives.

Educational Grants

The Nantucket Land Council is proud to support local organizations and schools who foster an appreciation of science and nature through their programming. Beginning with funding for the annual Nantucket High School Science Fair and ranging from a Marine Biology unit for the Nantucket Lighthouse School and Nantucket New School Students to conduct scallop research, water quality testing kits, and after-school programs for Strong Wings students, the NLC supports further learning and exploration into Nantucket's natural environment. Click here to read more about our grants program and our past recipients.

Working with StudentsIn order to provide students with hands-on science and nature lessons, the NLC is committed to working with students in all schools on Nantucket. Read more here.

Providing Community Educational Resources

The Nantucket Land Council is pleased to offer some general information for the public about Nantucket, its ecosystems, hydrology, and natural resources.  If you need to know something about Nantucket's environment, we have an extensive library including many of our previous research studies.  In addition to our educational resource pages listed below, please visit our publications page to find out more about protecting the environment.
