Education: Educational Grants

Since 1993, the NLC has awarded environmental awareness and science project grants to local students and teachers.  Recent grants include water quality test kits for teacher Matthew Liddle, support for a science fair project on the Osphradium and the distribution of glycogen in Bay Scallops for which Stephen Estabrooks will be the advisor, materials for the construction of a stream/erosion table for Nantucket Elementary School teacher Mike Girvin, new field equipment for Strong Wings, support for Nantucket New School teacher Chris Getoor’s ecology course, support for a study and book production on Nantucket’s marine mammals by the Nantucket Lighthouse School, and support for the Nantucket High School Science Fair.  The NLC’s goal in providing these grants to Nantucket’s schools is to increase the educational opportunities of local students, specifically in areas of science and of the local environment.  Grants are awarded every fall.  For more information or to get a grant application, please contact Emily Molden at our office.

Pictured here: Students at the Nantucket Lighthouse School present a check to the NLC. The students received one of our educational grants to study Nantucket wildflowers and then produce a book. Much to our surprise, instead they created a beautiful calendar. The calendars were then sold and raised $6,000 which the students then donated to our Loring Campaign to preserve 270 acres.
