In order to truly understand and appreciate the natural world, interaction with it is essential. Nantucket is fortunate to have many protected spaces that are open to the public. Although we have played a large role in protecting many properties which you are free to explore, we have since transferred most of them to either the Nantucket Conservation Foundation (NCF) or the Nantucket Land Bank for stewardship and management. For a map of properties open to the public, or for brochures on individual parks, we recommend contacting the NCF.
The NLC does not regularly offer guided tours, but we can make some recommendations. For a self-guided exploration, just head on out to one of our beautiful beaches or try one of these walks:
Madaket Sunset

January is the time to break out the binoculars and see the daily migration of thousands of long-tailed ducks between Nantucket Sound and the open sea. (See them at sunrise near 'Sconset too.) Of course, there is nothing better than the sunset in the summer, so don’t hesitate to take a walk on the beach and watch sun set over the ocean – on the East Coast, no less!

CoffinPark

Conveniently located in town, check out this historical property. Enter at 48 Cliff Rd. and take a tour by the Oldest House on Sunset Hill Rd.

West Squam Swamp

Drive out Wauwinet Rd., and just before Pocomo Rd. on the left, turn right into the Nantucket Conservation Foundation’s parking area. A fascinating brochure for this walk is available from the NCF, or bring along our field guide “A Walk in Squam.”

Hummock Pond
Take Millbrook Rd. left off of Madaket Rd., and drive about 1/2 mile to Land Bank parking on the right. A winding path offers secluded Pond views and enters “deep” woods on beautiful property protected by the Land Bank.
The Moors
From Polpis Road, take the second right after the right turn to North Pastures, cross the bike path, and park. Walk the road into the moors, take the left fork, climb a high hill, note the geodetic markers, and enjoy spectacular views.
